New Voyages changed Fan Films, once fan films were all amateurs and then New Voyages came along, and they had professionals on screen and behind the camera.

“To Serve All My Days” had the talents of Walter Koenig, Mary Linda Rappleye and D.C. Fontana for the episode with the former two starring and guest starring and D.C. Fontana was the writer of the episode.

Mary played Irina in Star Trek episode “The Way to Eden”, Irina was romantically involved with Chekov before that particular episode, but this time Mary plays Ambassador Rayna Morgan.

This episode has it all, there are diplomatic problems, the Klingons causing problems, health issues causing problems and more.

Having Walter Koenig playing Chekov was a big deal and his performance made it work so well, you couldn’t have placed anybody in the role he served in the fan film (trying not to give it away for people who haven’t seen it)

It had been some time since I’ve seen this episode and I remember how confusing the episode was because a major part of the plot contradicted what we’ve seen in the movies, but an alternate ending placed at the end changes things for viewers so watch through to the end.

The NBC opening gave it that classic TV look and the visual effects were outstanding for the time, sometimes you can hear the clunk of boots hitting wood on the bridge reminding viewers that this is a fan production, but nobody minded such a small thing.

New Voyages sure did up the ante when they released this fan film, they were at the top of fan films as they continued to grow and their work unintentionally started a fan film arms race that saw Axanar and what is now Paramount Global clash when they tried to up the ante even further with an almost totally professional team.
