There’s a new fan film in town and it is called Star Trek First Frontier.

This fan film is running the ViacomCBS gauntlet by having an hour and twenty minute running time (not 2 x 15 minutes) and heavily borrowing from Star Trek’s many soundtracks.

It is also billed as being a “Independent Star Trek film” which is a big no-no but the First Frontier creator believes that the movie is immune from Fan Film Guidelines as it was in production before the guidelines came into effect.

First Frontier shines a spotlight on Captain Robert April, the first Captain of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 and he appears to be a reluctant Captain but slowly grows into the role.

It should be noted that Robert April will be appearing in a part of Axanar when its 2 x 15 minutes are released (and/or part of the special features).

The sets look great, the acting looks good for a fan film (I’m not calling it an Independent Film) and the CGI is decent but there is one major problem that affects the enjoyment of First Frontier.

The major problem is that the sound is not that flash and brings down the movie, there are some moments where you need to really turn up the sound only for your ears to get blasted when the a piece from Wrath of Khan starts playing.

There’s action and character development but patience will be severely tested by the sound quality because as said you really need to turn up the volume and you may not catch the plot of the fan film because of the sound issue.

Some people may find great amusement from those who are thanked in the end credits and may explain why they are taking a risk with First Frontier.

Overall it is an interesting fan film but it is let down by the issues with sound that impact the level of enjoyment.
