“Demons” is a fan production released in 2019 that takes place on the USS Excalibur but with a twist.
The opening shots show that USS Excalibur being attacked by the M5 computer run USS Enterprise and as we know the USS Excalibur life support systems go out and everyone on board the ship dies.
Before that happens, Commander Laws leaves the bridge and goes to Deck 5 and leaves a message to Starfleet about an artifact, he is killed before he finishes delivering a second message.
The twist is that at the start, you will see in the left hand corner ‘Avalon Universe’ so this is Star Trek but it does not share the timeline with Star Trek (1966-69).
Universe seems to be a popular buzzword in fan productions as time to time you see the phrase Axanar Universe to describe it and fan production called Interlude.
The action is then moves to the Excalibur at a later date having been fully repaired and under the command of Captain Ramirez, viewers are soon introduced to Commander Beck, Lt Commander Jamie Archer, Dr T’Mera and other officers and crew of the ship.
Part 1 was certainly interesting, the first part is certainly character development driven but there is action in the form of ship to ship combat, the arrival of a Klingon and more.
Part 2 has more action in it through space combat, there is more death as an unfortunate member of the crew dies and the Captain faces inner turmoil before getting back on track.
As mentioned earlier, the ‘Avalon Universe’ does not share the same timeline as Star Trek (1966-69) so you will see differences such as different video screens and alert graphics so make sure you remember that before seeing the two parts.
The Avalon Universe may be playing with fire as CBS says there shouldn’t be seasons or additional episodes but there is the feeling that the guidelines are just words on paper and CBS would only be interested in enforcing those guidelines if somebody tries making tens of thousands of dollars or even a million from the fan productions.
Overall: 4 out of 5
